ADAT XT20 Doesn't play back

I have an Alesis ADAT XT20. I made a recording a few weeks ago and all seemed fine. I tried to play it back and there is no sound and no levels indicated. However, if I push the play and fast forward for cue, I see the levels and hear the accelerated recording. Problem seems to be in the play function because when I press play the tape moves and indicates the time on tape is functioning but the play button indicator light flashes. Does anyone know what this flashing means and what it might take to fix the machine? :(

Maybe there's a mismatch in the sample rate? If the play button is flashing it could be that the tape was recorded at 48k and is being played back at 44.1k (or vice-versa)?

The original ADAT was much more prone to this as the sample rate was set by means of changing the pitch. But all the ADAT models since then can detect sample rate and they usualy automatically switch to the correct sample rate. Is your system getting its clock from an external source?

I considered the sample rate button may have been bumped so I tried both positions. In addition I tried to play tapes that I had previously recorded that I had no problem playing back before. Now they won't play either. More info, There are no error codes displayed, the clean head indication is not displayed. I've tried the Re-Initializing technique (hold Record and Play while turning on machine) indicated in the manual but this did nothing to correct the problem. Does anyone know of other button combinations that might be used to correct my problem. Or I up for any other advise or suggestions. Thanks

I would have next suggested that you check that it is on internal clock (not external) and that it is not on input. But if you have reinitialized it, then these settings should be ok.

It might be time to take it to a pro repair place. See this thread for Alesis repair deets:
