My new (EBay 400 head hours) DA-98 looks Like it's recording. ...monitors ok on input...... but on playback there is nothing there. Menu item wrong? The machine works great otherwise.

If the track meters show levels during recording, but not on playback, then here are a few things to try:

Check that each track's "record enable" button is on, so that the red light at the bottom of that track's meter is on.

Check if you are in "all input." If so, turn it off and turn on "auto mon." See the manual for the interaction between these two buttons.

Also, if the tape is write protected, it may appear to record when it actually will not.

Still no record.

Things I've Tried: Analog and digital inputs - Same symptom
Osc as source - same symptom
default Track Copy menu item
Rec Mute menu item default
Check block error rate - Its great
Ddifferent tapes
Copy protet tab in - or- out / acts normal
Ive used this thing as a mix down deck for 6 hrs already it performs wonderfully.
I'm starting to think that this thing is broke!

hmmm, if you've tried all of the things that we've mentioned, what's left?

How about resetting it to factory defaults in this menu:
menu group 9 --> Setup --> Choose "F" for factory then "load"

After that, if a solution doesn't come up it might be time for a service center... If there's not a good one in your area, send it directly to Tascam in CA.
