preamps: is distortion bad for the preamp?

i just bought a preamp for the first time, its an ART PSTII Tube Preamp. I can get some pretty cool distortion out of it when i boost all the gains a lot, but my question is: is it bad for the preamp when i boost both the input and output gains all the way up like that?

No, that shouldn't damage the preamp as far as I know. It sure sounds like it would when you overdrive a tube, huh? It might affect the lifespan of the tube, though. But since those tubes are cheap it's worth the creative value. It definitely doesn't damage the rest of the unit. Make sure to give it plenty of air circulation- don't block the air vents! I would rackmount it with empty spaces above and below it. Or check out these cool rackspace fillers:
