Hi All,
Do all Tascam DA machiens use the same tape? The only full manual I can find on the net is for the DA98, they recommend (among others) Sony P6-HMP which is very cheap. Has anybody tried this tape in a DA38?

Thanks,
Juda

I've written complete coverage of this here:

Thanks Tony,
I've read your very informative article, but still want to know why does Tascam recommend a non DTRS tape for these machiens, like Sony's P6HMP? Can this tape damage the machien? My application is not pro recording. Just trying to record my band in a live situation.

That tape won't damage a DA-38. I bet it would work fine. Particularly for a live recording scenario in which the tape is recorded on once, then played back to mix or transfer to a computer for mixing. If you were in a studio situation with lots of back-and-forth shuttling, overdubs etc, I'd recommend spending a few more bucks on a tougher tape.

Of course, a live recording can't be recreated so think about the value of those couple-a dollars you're saving on the cheaper tape...

Keep in mind that the manual for the DA-98 was written in 1997 (or earlier). As I recall, that was before tape makers were labeling certain Hi-8 tapes as specifically made for DTRS. So not to worry that the tapes listed aren't officially branded as DTRS. I'm surprised some are still being made at all.
