Media Asset Management System Workflows

These workflows are used in the Media Asset Management (MAM) Systems Guide. There is a wide spectrum of use cases, so particular MAM systems may be suited for multiple workflows.

Workflow Description
Production and Editing This workflow represents collaborative production ("work in progress") environments, and may include functionality such as review of newly generated media, editing, and transfer between successive production stages. Examples of this workflow include a movie production, a television production, and an audio recording studio.
Business and Marketing Management of brand marketing assets and/or deployment to digital channels. Emphasis is often on version control, efficiency, speed, clean interface, and rights management. May offer integration into other enterprise-level systems and production applications. Other business cases (beside marketing departments) may fit this workflow as well.
Broadcast Playback This workflow is for broadcast environments, to cue up completed video and audio pieces for airing. Important features are program review, playlist generation, and fast operation. Examples include television and radio stations.
Discovery Interface This workflow is for environments where the user is searching for, selecting, and/or playing back media. This may be through the web or through a proprietary interface. Emphasis is on aiding the user to find what they are looking for, exposing them to related media, and/or presenting the media to the user. Examples include a digital library and an on-demand video streaming service.
Consumer Download This workflow is for environments where the user is shopping for and purchasing media. This may be through the web or through a proprietary interface. Emphasis is on aiding the user to find what they are looking for, exposing them to related media, and completing the download transaction. Examples include a digital music store and a pay-per-view video service.
Archives This workflow is for an archives or a similar situation in which the assets are no longer in the production stage, and may have passed their immediate reason for creation. Operational focus is on cataloguing, documenting and maintaining access to the assets.
Preservation Long term preservation of assets, including: file integrity, file format registry, application version logging, event logging, and administrative metadata acquisition.
(To Be Determined) This value is used when the workflow for a MAM requires further evaluation to determine.
